When I was pregnant with my second child, I received a diagnosis that completely threw me off—gestational diabetes. I was disappointed, even angry. This wasn’t the pregnancy I had envisioned. As someone who likes to plan, I craved control, but suddenly, I was facing something entirely unknown.
Determined to avoid medication, I began tracking my blood sugar obsessively, pricking my finger throughout the day to see how different foods affected me. Despite my best efforts to avoid sugar and junk food, I was shocked to discover that even my “healthy” carbs—whole wheat rolls, fiber cereals, and skim milk—were causing my blood sugar to spike.
I realized it wasn’t just sugar—it was all carbs.
It felt like my world had flipped upside down. How could I manage this without starving myself, especially with a baby growing inside me? I started shifting toward more protein and healthy fats, foods I’d always avoided because I believed “fat makes you fat.” I was terrified of gaining weight and even struggled to enjoy meals, fearing foods like butter or sour cream.
But then, something incredible happened. The fatigue faded, and I felt more energized and satisfied. My endless cravings began to disappear, and for the first time, I wasn’t obsessing over my next meal or punishing myself for indulging. Life became easier, and I felt happier.
After giving birth, I had gained minimal weight, which was easier to lose than after my previous pregnancy. Out of my nine pregnancies, eight involved gestational diabetes, but I never needed medication. My babies were born healthy, without complications, and I learned that managing insulin resistance was the key to my health and energy.
